Your Voice and Blogging

I'm curious again.

*grin*

The "voice" of my blog is pretty similar to who I am in "real" life. I think I'm down-to-earth, approachable, and friendly, and I hope my blog reflects this.

However, I wonder i
f the tone of my blog will change when I become a published novelist (notice it is when, not if! Must. Think. Positive!). Will I have a need to convey myself differently once I have a book on the shelves and (hopefully) more people reading my blog? Or will my blog's voice stay exactly as it is? I am hoping it is the latter.

I am fortunate enough to have a few published authors reading my blog
, so if they feel like chiming in on this, I'd love to hear their thoughts. And for anyone else who is hoping to become a published author someday, I am very curious to hear what you think, too.

  1. You know, I've been curious about the same thing before. I wonder if I'll need to conduct myself in a different manner (more "professionally") once published. I'd like to think not, that who I am today will work just as well then as it does now.

  2. I'd like to think that my blog reflects my personality and the way I talk anyway. My articles are also written the way I talk, and so are my short stories.

I often worry that I'm not being very professional some of the time, but then I think, what the hell. This is me, it's the way I am and it's the way I'll be whether you hire me or not. I'm a real person. But I was always brought up to be well mannered and polite, so I hope this also comes across.

As to if I every become a published novelist, I think the same may pretty well still apply.

  3. Since my "voice" is down-home, I don't intend to change my blog tone one single bit WHEN my fiction ms is published. In fact, I'd think it'd be really important to maintain the same basic blog before and after publishing. Isn't that what your readers/friends have come to know and love? :) Write on!

  4. I sure hope that I'm always able to write my blog as I see fit and not have to shield my voice or words for any reason, including publication.

  5. How can you change your 'Voice'?

You are who you are. It would take contrived effort to change it.

    This isn't what you're about.

My blog, my writing, my conversations...all the same type of voice. I'm a bit sarcastic and I love to make people laugh, so it all comes out that way. I don't see it changing if I get published. I MEAN WHEN. Whew, that was close to getting bad karma. Besides, the only difference is then we are getting paid!

  7. I think if your readers love your book (and we know they will) and your blog readers love your blog, I'm sure the two are similar. You will want to remain true to yourself. Some people always mistake fiction for fact, you can't help that.

    Just be yourself.

Well, I'm not sure you voice will change, but maybe what you share and how you share it?

Though I DO think my voice has changed..or come into its own...in the last few years.

I don't think my voice will change when the book comes out, but what Kacey said--I'm not sure you voice will change, but maybe what you share and how you share it--is very true to my experience. Suddenly it's not just you and the microphone, but you speaking for a team, and you have to take care.

  11. I'll echo Kacey and Therese. Although I came at it the opposite way...I got published first, then started a blog. Finding my voice for the blog was tough; seems funny to say, but it was tough to relax and just be myself. Yours is a wonderful voice, engaged and chatty, just as if we're at your kitchen table with cups of coffee. So no, I think your voice won't change (I hope it won't). But what you have to share will change with the different stages of your journey. I'm looking forward to it!
