Take a Moment...

Sometimes we have to reevaluate why we write. We can get completely caught up in craft discussions, marketing strategies, contests, and promotion. But there comes a time where we must distance ourselves from all those things and think about the writing.

When is the last time you asked yourself, "Why do I write?"

Are you missing that spark? Has your writing become a daily job - but a job that you really don't enjoy all that much? Have you lost that childish enthusiasm for your manuscript?

I think I have. I've been so focused on the "big picture" - i.e. getting published, branding myself, trying to prepare for my career - that I have lost sight of the simple pleasure of stringing words together.

There is a time and a place for all of the things I mentioned above. In fact, all those subjects are imperative to being a writer. We must think about marketing and publicity and craft.

But if you need to slow down for a minute and reimmerse yourself in the whole reason why you write, then grab a copy of Brenda Ueland's If You Want to Write. I've already read this once and I loaned it to someone who unfortunately, did not return it. Today, I bought another copy because I had the urge to read it again. Some part of my soul is begging to go back to that quiet place where I think about the wonders of writing and of why I love it so much.

If You Want to Write will help you to slow down and take a moment to remember why I first put pen to paper. Because in the end, it's all about the words.

  1. This is exactly what I'm going through right now, so your post hit me square on the head. [] I think I'll pick up that book. I love to write, and I have fun doing it, but so much other stuff can get it the way if you let it! Thanks for sharing.

  2. I think once you enter into the submission game, it is harder to remember why you are writing. You do have to think about the business side of writing. Also, once you start developing your style as a writer, I think you start looking at your writing a little different. It is a stage you go through but I think it can be overcome.

  3. I've never heard of this book before, I think I need to go check it out...

The big picture can get in the way - I went through that for the past month and didn't get any writing done. There's so much more involved than what you think when you first start...

  6. I haven't been at it long enough to forget why I write. I write because I love it - and it's nurturing to my soul. But I know there will come a time when I'll feel the ennui - I'll remember this book then.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd love to go back to the time before I understood passive voice and POV...those where the days!

I haven't read that book before, but it sounds good. I love just the act of putting words on paper. It's fun to watch worlds unfold.
