Ah....Romance (And Fridays)

It's Friday and the best day of the week!

Tell me. Do you go through cycles with your significant other? Are there times when you're madly, deeply, completely in love and other times, well, you love him/her, but you're definitely not in love with him/her?

Last week, I fell back in love with my husband. I hadn't felt that way in a long time. What with our marriage dilemma and all...well, let's just say it felt good.

We write romance. And there's a certain bit of fantasy to it. After all, we're not in love with our significant other all the time. And if you are, then please, tell us your secret! Generally speaking, though, romances end before the hard part really starts. The happily ever after is there - but lots of novels don't tell us exactly how things go after our hero and heroine make the commitment to each other.
But that's ok. To me, reality is hard enough to deal with. I want to read about a couple who has worked through their problems and solved them. I want to read of a couple that is in such perfect harmony with each other that they see stars in each other's eyes. Then for a few minutes, I can sigh in contentment, smile, and think, "Yup, love is wonderful."

Isn't writing romances a great job?

Happy Friday!

  1. I don't know. I don't have a significant other, which is why I love romances. They fill that void in my life - yes, it's fantasy, but it's better than nothing.

  2. Woohoo! Glad to hear you're back in love again! I've never fallen out of love with Officer Sweetie Man. Been mad at him many times, but the love-love has always been there. I just remember why I fell in love with him, and all the sweet things he does for me everyday. That's why he earned the name Officer Sweetie Man. ;)

  3. I have no significant other. I've come close a few times but have found no happy ending. Maybe that's why I write romances. AT least then I can make the happy ending happen. Not so easy in real life.

  4. My m-i-l and I were talking about the cycle thing just last week! We agreed that marriage really does take work and people who expect it all to be perfect are going to be disappointed.

That's why I like writing and reading romances wherein the couple really has to work through things, not just fall in love and wander off into the sunset.

  5. Marriage does take a lot of work and I don't know anybody who says it doesn't. Reading romance is the fantasy. That's good. Who wants to read about washing up and mowing the lawn and being too tired to have sex?

I'm lucky enough to love my husband very much and to be 'in' love with him at regular intervals. But everyone has those moments when their needs and aspirations don't match up--maybe that's the key?
    Don't know :)

  6. I know what you mean, Melissa. Real life takes over and sometimes it's hard to recapture the fairy tale.

  7. This is a great question and one not often discussed, at least openly. My wife and I will be celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary in August, and we would both readily admit there have been peaks and valleys in our relationship over the years.
Keeping a marriage healthy does take work.
In my opinion, open and honest communication about everything is the key.

It's definitely a lot of work, but it's worth it when you have the right person. Just keep in mind there will always be hills and valleys.

Here here, Melissa (hear hear?). Romance is a continuation of the fairy tale we believed in as little girls. Guys have their fantasies, we have ours.
    Happy birthday on Thursday!!!!
