The Importance of a Clean Desk

Hubby finally got tired of looking at my stacks of stuff. Since we were putting a ceiling up over my office in the basement, I had to take everything off my desk and put it wherever I could. Well, the ceiling has been done for almost two weeks now, and I had yet to put my office back to the way it was.

Hubby gently suggested that I work on it Sunday and even though I wasn't in the mood, I did it anyway. He's been pretty darn patient, so the least I could do was get rid of all my stacks of stuff. It took me most of the afternoon, but I have to say that I'm very glad I did it. Things look much better now and I feel like I have my cozy spot back. I have my own little corner of the house that is all mine - and even though I don't have a door to shut out the world, this will do just fine.

We had more snow over the weekend - six inches of the white stuff. Hubby and I also went on a date Saturday night - went to a local blues club and listened to some great jazz. Fun to get out once in awhile. I did edit some on Saturday, but not nearly as much as I wanted to. But now that the desk is clean and organized, that is one less thing I need to worry about.

Do you need to have a clean desk to focus?

  1. I don't have a desk. Okay, I have one, but it's tiny, and I don't use it. I write on my laptop, in my recliner.

And for the record, order seems to disrupt my creative flow. ;-)

  2. A messy desk means nothing to me except that it takes me too long to find things! Which is in itself counterproductive and why I'm trying to keep things tidy too.

    Cute snowman cartoon!

A clean desk definitely helps. When I'm struggling with the wip, anything can become a (welcome) distraction! :)

  4. The desk looks great! Though I did almost ROTFL over your dh's "gentle suggestion". Sean has to do much the same with me - hence my urge to laugh.

BTW, have you seen the British series Foyle's War? If not, I think you'd like it.

  5. Funny I just blogged about getting a new small desk for my laptop. I just put it together and I'm going to organize it today. It's going to be strictly my writing desk, no one else allowed. I'm all business.

Let's see how long I can keep this up. :)

  8. I'm impressed. That's one VERY clean desk, which makes me sink in my chair when I look at mine and try to see the TOP under papers and books and sleeping cats and.... argh! I guess I'd better do mine, too. Maybe then I can actually finish this novel and deliver it to my publisher on time!

    Thanks for the nudge.

  9. Well, I don't have the kind of desk I want. I'm using the old roll top and it isn't conducive to writing. I don't need a clean desk to write, but I like to have one. In fact, I should clean mine up right now.

Sounds like a fun date with hubby.

  10. I can't write when my writing room is messy. It's like the amount of mess directly correlates to how jammed up my brain gets.

Last year, I bought My Desk. And everything is Just So. How else will I ever know if someone came into my house???

  12. Looks good.

I start with a clean desk but it doesn't stay that way long. I do find I'm more productive with the extra space of cleanliness though.

Sounds like you had a great date.

  13. I love the pics of your desk. It looks like a nice cozy place that is all yours. I'm kind of compulsive about having "a place for everything, and everything in its place." It saves time searching for things.
