Step Away from the News!

The economy stinks. People are losing their jobs. We're still fighting a war. And the bad news goes on and on and on.

I admit that I have become a news junkie as of late to keep up with everything. But after awhile, it really starts to wear you down. A person can only take so much doom and gloom before it starts to affect your mood.

That's when it's time to step away from the news for awhile. Turn off CNN. Don't click on ABCnews.com. Click on www.icanhazcheezburger.com and laugh at all the cute kitties. Go to http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com and giggle at the monstrous cakes some people come up with. And after you've had a good laugh, you can go back to the news. Or not. Take the day off.

Me, I like to immerse myself in my writing. It's my own little vacation for the mind. After an hour or so in my characters' world, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle my own world.

  1. I used to be a news junkie. But I found that it just brought me down. I was watching Jon Stewart the other night and he was talking about watching the Dow. It was hilarious. I'll still read the news and flip the channels and the scrolls when I'm on the treadmill.

  2. I think hitting the project is an excellent "escape." What better way to get away, and yet accomplish something at the same time?

  3. We limit ourselves to one half hour a day of news--anymore and we are majorly depressed!!

  4. I've turned into an ostrich, but one can only take so much of the doom and gloom that makes up current news stories.

Like you, I escape to my characters' world where there's far more good news. Apart from the odd murder, of course. ;o)

  5. I think it is time to go back to remembering all of the miracles that we have all around us every day. Cell phones, airplanes and the internet on the technology side of things. And we can never forget to notice the miracles mother nature provides at every turn.

  6. I watch far less of the news than I used to, but still find it all so miserable. I do hope things start looking better for everyone soon.

  8. I'd rather watch the news about the economy than look at cute cats!

I do think the news feeds itself. In some ways the constant bad news about the economy is making it worse. But I also think it is important to keep ourselves informed. Knowledge is power.

  10. I shut my laptop down for the entire weekend and never checked anything and didn't watch any news. The news networks are entertainment networks and as such, they only want to report on conflict and negativity. Reading or watching people rant and pick fights is demoralizing to me and I don't think it serves any useful purpose. Looking for ways to pull together during challenging times is far more uplifting and much better for the soul.

  12. I agree! It's easy to get discouraged these days. I am trying to unplug more and just live my life.

  14. I can't remember the last time I watched the news, or listened to it. I keep forgetting to, to be honest.

  15. We'll watch the news if it's actual news, and not gossip about the First Lady's clothes or someone's latest gaffe which now has to be picked apart by 18 talking heads, all of whom are pushing their own agendas. Which, unfortunately, most of the news now is. That's what I find most depressing.

Writing is the best escape. A close second is immersing myself in another story, in a book or DVD. Stories rule!
