Thoughts on Turning 30

For some reason, turning 30 is a lot harder than I thought. I'm no longer in my twenties, but my twenties weren't all that great to begin with. From 20 to about 24, I graduated from undergrad school, got a job that had nothing to do with my degree, partied, dated loser guys, partied some more, and then...I met my husband. And from about 24 until today, I had a baby, earned my master's degree, published two children's books, and bought a house. I'm thinking the latter half of the twenties was a lot better than the first.

But it makes you wonder what the next ten years will bring. I hope and pray a published novel is in there somewhere. And I'd love to get a job using my degree, although I really like my job right now. And winning the lottery would be nice...

My co-workers decorated my desk, one of them brought me balloons and flowers, and we're all going out to eat at a great Italian place for lunch. My brother is bringing me cake tonight and I got a gorgeous lace shawl from my mom. Turning 30 isn't so bad after all...

  1. Hey, thirty is the new twenty. Have a good one and eat lots of cake. It is fat-free and calorie-free on your birthday.

  2. Happy Birthday...I have LOVED my thirties so far. Babies and writing. LOL. Why bother with all that education when you end up staying home anyway!!!

The world is an odd place...I got my PhD at 25 and now look at me, effectively unemployed :)

Melissa, I found turning 30 much harder than turning 40 (which I did recently). I had my children starting in my late 20s into my early 30s, so my 30s are now, looking back, one big blur of diapers and screaming. 40, ah. Me time. Look forward to the next 10 years and beyond. Surprisingly, it gets better, not worse!

  4. I have to admit, my 30s kicked my 20s ass. They were soooo much better. Especially the latter half of the 30s which I'm still working my way through. I've had a blast. I think once I hit my 30s a lot of the hang ups I had in my 20s melted away. I had no use for them anymore. I think you really start to come into your own once you hit the big 3-0. Makes me curious what's going to happen once I reach 40, but I'm trying not to think about it. It's still a couple years away and I'm not sure I'm ready for it yet.

  5. Thanks, gals, for your good wishes. I think my biggest hang-up right now is the way I look - the weight gain since having the baby, the good-bye of my size 7 body.

  6. Happy Birthday, Melissa :-) Enjoy your 30s!! I'll be leaving mine later this year. Won't miss them much (found out I couldn't have a baby, my dad died). Hope my 40s treat me better!! And I'm told I still LOOK like I'm in my 30s, so that's ok *vbg*.
