What's Your Escape?

Reality can be so inconvenient.

But let's face it. We all have to live in reality in order to, well, live. But there are plenty of times I want and need to mentally escape from reality for a few minutes or a few hours.

So what's my favorite way to escape?

I have a few:
  • Watch a classic movie from the 1940s or 1950s - State Fair and Laura are two of my favorites for leaving the modern world and all its problems behind.
  • Read a wonderful novel that completely sucks me into its world.
  • Listen to old-time radio shows. This is so much fun, and is often a lot better than anything on t.v.
  • Peruse through my magazine collection of the 1940s. There is nothing like immersing yourself in a different time period.

What about you? How do you escape from reality?

  1. I love spending a couple hours watching an old movie too. Have you ever seen Marty, with Ernest Borgnine? It's one of my favorites, and I highly recommend it :)

  2. Joanne - No, I haven't seen that one. Will have to look it up!

  3. I write! The need to escape reality was exactly the reason I became a writer. While I'm writing, I can leave the real me behind, and I become my characters. I'll lose track of time and, for a while, nothing exists but the world I'm creating.

Movies and books are definitely good escapes too (and the two you mention are good ones!!), but not as immersive as writing for me.

  4. I read a few blogs about and for writers (like your blog!), and I try to figure out what to make for dinner, and unload the dishwasher, and things like that. I sit on my behind way too much so I need to get up and move around.

    Linda

  5. DK - Can I do a face palm right about now? I can't believe I forgot that particular way to leave reality behind. Sheesh!!! But you're so right. Writing is a wonderful way for me to escape, too.

Linda - Unloading the dishwasher is part of that nasty reality thing. LOL. ;-)

  7. One of my ways is through playing the piano and composing music - I can just get lost in the melodies. I also enjoy looking at photo albums from the past and present and enjoy looking through scrapbooks full of memories:-)

  8. I love escaping through music and writing.

Or working out at the boxing ring. Sometimes its nice just to punch something :)

  9. I'm going to sound like a lunatic (but this is actually a common thing for musical theater performers to do...I've asked.) I turn on a cast recording of a musical and act the entire thing out in my bedroom. I escape into another world for awhile. It's a great emotional release.

  10. I get out and walk two miles around the farm and marvel in the beauty of the outdoors. I pray while I walk. Or, I work on my quilting, which is very relaxing to me.

  11. Valerie - You're welcome! ;-)

Mom (aka Carole!) - I still remember you playing the piano and filling the house with music. I could tell you were just lost in the notes and letting the music carry you away.

Kelley - Y'know, I may have to take up boxing...as long as I myself didn't get hit! LOL

More Than - Doesn't sound crazy at all! In fact, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Sandi - There's something about taking a long walk and marveling in God's beauty that centers us, I think. :-)

  12. I do pretty much the same as you, although I don't have a fabulous magazine collection. I also love walking the dog on the beach.

  13. Ditto to what you said, of course! I'll add losing myself for hours on the internet, researching the past via blogs or the Fedora Lounge. Ironic, I know, lol!

  14. Debs - Ahhh. Walking the dog on the beach sounds like a perfect way to escape!

Betsy - Oh, I hear you! Researching the past on blogs is another favorite past-time of mine. And the gang over at the Fedora Lounge is addictive!

One of my favorite escapes is MURDER, SHE WROTE books and DVD's, because Jessica Fletcher is the most level-headed person I know. She also travels to exotic locations and makes sure that everything turns out for the best!

  16. Betty - Y'know, I don't think I've ever watched a Murder She Wrote mystery. I may have to change that!
