What Are You Reading? Summer Edition

I'm just plain worn out after my crazy 4th of July weekend. We went home to western Nebraska and it's a 5-6 hour drive. With all three kids along, we were pretty cramped, so it wasn't exactly a comfortable road trip.

But we had a fabulous time with family and friends (well, except for my daughter getting sick on Saturday!).

So I'm recuperating (though after eating a bunch of not-good-for-me fare, I'm off to exercise over my lunch hour!), and thought it would be the perfect time to ask all of you what you're reading.

My list:

The Jewel of St. Petersburg by Kate Furnivall, a historical novel set in the years right before the Russian Revolution.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson. Fascinating look at the American ambassador's experience in pre-war Germany.

Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo. This family is from Nebraska, and it's a wonderful read.

You?

  1. That's a long haul, but I'm glad you had fun. I remember when our kids were little, one of them was sick each holiday. It never failed! I'm reading James Scott Bell's Plot & Structure. It's excellent. I have lots of books waiting TBR. There's never enough time, huh?

  2. Lyn - Ooh! I also have the plotting book on my nightstand. I've been reading it off and on when I have the chance. You're right - it's terrific!

  3. I've been re-reading two of my favorites--Hannibal and Lonesome Dove. Both were recently on TV in movie form, and I remembered how much I loved them.

Maybe it's just me, but lately I go to Barnes & Noble and I just can't find anything new that looks interesting.

  4. Just finished Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire (I'm just now making my way through the HP books!); starting A Clash of Kings, by George R.R. Martin; also starting a paranormal YA, Forgotten, by Cat Patrick; have about 10 more books on the bedstand waiting.

Sounds like you had a great 4th! Hope your daughter is feeling better.

  5. That's a long journey, especially if you're short on space and comfort. Glad you had a good time though. Hope your daughter is fully recovered now.

I'm about to choose something from my enormous TBR Everest. For non-fiction, I've got Elizabeth George's 'Write Away' on the go. I don't read many books on writing but I'm enjoying this one.

  6. I've got your second and third recs on my booklist. (Reminder to self: take that list to the library!) I just finished History of Love and, though utterly confused in parts, I ate it up.

    Yay for summer reading!

  7. My reading list seems to grow by the day. I have the new ones from SEP, J Crusie, Susanna Kearsley, two ebooks from Julianne MacLean, The Help, and a few others. I may need to take an entire month of just to put a dent in the TBR pile. Oh, if only that were possible...

  8. Elizabeth - I have heard Lonesome Dove is a spectacular novel.

Christine - For some reason, I just cannot get into the Harry Potter craze. Don't hold it against me. ;-)

Shirley - I've been tempted to pick up Elizabeth George's book at the library. May have to do that!

RT - Oh, I read History of Love a few years ago when we picked it for our book club at work. It is definitely a different kind of book.

Kelly - I need to read The Help, too. Add another one to the list!

  9. I just put some more free goodies on my Kindle last night - Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town by Stephen Leacock, An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott and A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter. Those last two fall under the heading of titles I've been hearing or seeing somewhere for years but never got around to reading.
