Easter Weekend

It's Good Friday today and my mother is on her way to our city from her small farm in Western Nebraska. My daughter is looking forward to spending time with her grandma, and I'm excited, too. :-) I don't get to see my mom a whole lot since she lives so far away, but we stay in touch via email and the phone.

We have a few Easter traditions that we haven't been able to do the past few years, but we're resurrecting them this year. One of them is watching The Ten Commandments. This was always on our t.v. stations every year when I was growing up and our entire family would sit down and watch it. Since I don't have a t.v. (only the little laptop), I bought the movie on DVD (on sale, even!) and we'll probably head over to my brother's house to watch it on his big screen t.v. We also make a cheesecake in the shape of an egg and enjoy that while watching the movie.

The biggest part about Easter for me, though, is sharing it with family and celebrating my faith. It is a reverent day for me in many, many ways.

Do you have any Easter traditions?

  1. Cheesecake and Charlton, a perfect combo.

We say "He is risen!" and "Indeed he has!" in Russian on impulse all day. We also have this egg rapping game. If your egg survives, you will have good luck all year.

Oh, and I have bestowed The Honest Scrap award upon you. I had a lot of fun with it.

  2. I start Easter morning by getting up before dawn and hiding Easter eggs, swearing as I trip in the dark. Then the kids get up and find the Easter eggs in 5 minutes and proceed to dive into the candy at 7:30 in the morning. Later everyone comes over for brunch. We usually have too much food and I get annoyed because there are 8 gazillion dishes and only my hubby, mom and I do any clean up. Then I swear I'm never doing it again. But I always do...

  4. Sounds like a wonderful tradition! I haven't shown my kids the Ten Commandments yet, but you're inspiring me to try to hunt it down!

We have the tradition of doing Resurrection Eggs. We open one egg a day on the 12 days before Easter. Each egg contains a symbol of the Easter story. Then the very last egg is empty to represent the empty tomb.

Of course we do the baskets and egg hunt and all the candy! But we really try to keep our focus on the spiritual aspect of the holiday!

  5. My kids and I have been spending Easter at a friends for the past 5 years. We're Jewish and were never before part of the bunny/basket/candy/eat a ham hoo-ha. The friends are not religious - it's a family day for them and we're always hoppy (couldn't help it) to be included as part of their tradition.

  6. My mom is coming out next weekend and my kids are pumped about it too. Normally we make egg salad sandwiches out of the eggs on Easter morning. :)

  7. Church, mostly. And Easter baskets (no candy though! This year it'll be Webkinz and stickers). I'm looking for some new traditions. I find Easter is the most meaningful holiday for me, but the one I least enjoy celebrating. I'm doing some thinking on why that is...

  8. I love dying Easter eggs the night before. We have no reason to right now, because neither of us would eat them. But, I did that every year, even into college.

  9. Hey Melissa! I'll worship in the morning and then spend the day at my parents house with the family. We hang out, eat dinner, play games, just be together. My sis hides eggs for her grandkids. It's fun! My hubby has to work and my son is in the Army but they will be with me in thought!

    Have a great Easter celebration!
