Miss Potter

Yesterday I caught Miss Potter on Showtime and couldn't tear myself away. It is an enchanting story about Beatrix Potter, the bestselling and beloved children's book author.

Simply put, I loved it. I loved Beatrix's spunk and determination to succeed with her art and storytelling, no matter that it was unfashionable to be unmarried and for a woman to make her own way in the world.

In addition to further flaming my love for England and my determination to someday buy a cottage there, this film was absolutely beautiful - the costumes, the crisp cinematography, the illustrations of Peter Rabbit and all of Beatrix's other friends, and the gorgeous scenery. Rene Zelwegger played the part of Beatrix with warmth and wit and portrayed her absolute love for her creativity.

My daughter, a budding artist herself, was entranced by the movie and promptly told me that she wants to start painting in addition to her drawing. In fact, when she saw the finished product of Beatrix's first children's book, she said, "That's what I want to do!"

This movie is such an inspiration for those who want to succeed in their artistic endeavors. And yes, I'll be adding it to my DVD collection. :-)

Beatrix Potter was one of the founding forces of the National Trust in the UK -- it's thanks to her, especially in her beloved Lake Country, that we have so much preserved.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I look forward to it.

  2. Devon - Yes, the movie did focus on this aspect of her life, as well, which I did not know until I watched it. She was just a great lady all around, I think. :)

  3. I'll have to find out if my older niece has seen it yet. Sounds like something she'd love.

I'm am so NOT a Renee Z fan, though, so I might have to focus mostly on Ewan *g*.

  4. Tess, it is a great movie for kids, too. Completely clean, no questionable content, etc.

I'm a fan of Renee, though I must admit I deplored the second Bridget Jones movie.

  9. I totally did NOT want to watch Renee Z do another British accent (and of course I'd watch Ewan M in anything), but this film rocked. I loved it. It was a charming, absolutely delightful movie and it will be on my Christmas wishlist this year.

  10. Ooh, I really liked this! Especially cause I adore Ewan McGregor. And I thought it was really well done with the animation and how she came to create the characters. Loved it!

Ello - Oh, the animation where the characters come to life really added a lot to the movie, IMO.
