Done (For the Most Part!)

I spent all weekend hanging pictures, cleaning, doing laundry, putting things away, and even took some time off to go antique shopping. As of last night, the house is pretty much done. I still need to mop the kitchen floor (because what is the point of doing it when we're carrying things through the kitchen all the live long day?), though to tell you the truth, I'm pretty sick of cleaning. I had to clean the apartment on Friday night (what a fun Friday night activity!) and that cured me of ever wanting to become a professional maid. I tip my hat to those folks. They are hard workers.

I love our house. It's so cute and cozy. All the hard work has definitely paid off! The last two mornings, I ate breakfast sitting at the kitchen table and watching the birds and squirrels play in the backyard through the kitchen window. Heavenly.

My daughter has decorated her room just how she wanted it and she couldn't be happier. We bought her a tiger mural for her wall, put up a shelf so she could display her Webkinz, and she has tacked up a ton of her drawings on just about every available inch of wall space.

Hubby has created his domain in the garage and downstairs - which is fine with me. He has his Oakland Raiders stuff, a nice, big sofa left to us by the previous renters, his DVD collection, and a huge t.v. He's set.

My office is wonderful. I have a few pics of it below. I've added some vintage touches - a vintage fan, 1940s curtains, 1940s magazines, and a few other items. And with the office being all finished, now it's time to get back to the writing.

I can't wait.

Here are a few pics to tide you over until I take more with my actual camera - these are just from my phone.

My vintage kitchen! 1950s curtains, 1950s tablecloth, vintage kitchen utensils and salt and pepper shakers; clock is from Target. :-)

My cozy reading nook in my office.
Oh look! Someone has taken residence in my reading spot!

  7. DK - My daughter also loves this reading spot. I've caught her snuggled into this chair several times already!

Patti - Things came together quite well. I think it helped that we had so much time to move.

Christine - Oh, how I can't wait to dive back into the writing. I've put several projects on hold while I was moving, but now it's time to move forward with 'em.

Erin - Thanks! I was pretty darn excited to get as much accomplished this weekend as I did, though it made for some pretty exhausting evenings...

Thanks, Joanne. :-) Kitty has really been checking everything out. She loves to look outside at the birds and squirrels, plus sit on the window sills!

Valerie - Aw, thanks! I am going to take some more pics tonight - with a proper camera instead of my phone!

  11. Oh, Melissa, your new place is beautiful! Your photos give me a little shot of encouragement at the end of Day 1 of my spring break home improvements. It's going to be great when the dust settles and we are back into a writing routine again, isn't it? Keep up the good work!

  12. Debs - Oh how I searched for those curtains! After about a week, a pair finally came up on Etsy that were PERFECT.

Carole, aka Mom: It is indeed a treat to watch the birds and squirrels! We're going to put a bird feeder in front of the window at some point. I'm hoping we can attract some cardinals that I've seen around the neighborhood!

Thank you, Janna. :-) It's been a lot of work, but well worth it.

Pam - Best of luck on your spring cleaning! I actually got a good start on a writing project of mine tonight in my brand new office. So nice!

  15. Every gal should have a reading nook. We likes. We wants. Now.

    It all looks lovely.

  16. Congratulations! You sound so excited about your new home and that's just the way it should be.

Q4U regarding your cat? Did he/she have trouble with the transition? Doesn't look like it in this photo that's why I ask. When we moved our cat hid under a guest room bed for over a month before he started accepting his new abode.

  17. Tana - It's very cozy! My daughter loves it, too. :-)

Tamika - It's been a lot of fun (though stressful) to get everything finished. I'd still like to find a few more vintage things for my office and the kitchen.

Diane - You should carve out a reading nook for yourself (and the cats!) somewhere!

Hi Eileen! Thanks for stopping by. I was amazed at how well my cat did with the transition. She hid for a few hours, but by that evening, she was exploring the entire house. She's quite comfortable now and has made the place her own. When I first got her (she was a rescue from a no-kill shelter), she was very, very timid and skittish. We were living in an apartment at that time and she hid for awhile and didn't want to associate with us. It just took a lot of love and patience with her before she finally came around. :-)
