Reading Tastes

I am curious.

Am I the only one who will start reading a book, put it aside, then pick it up weeks, or maybe even months later?

After leaving the library today with another armload full of books, including one I'd previously tried to read, I wondered about this. The only conclusion I came to was that it wasn't the right time for me to read the book in question.

I've done this several times, so it's not just weird blip on my reading radar.

Granted, there are some books that I read for a bit, then toss aside never to pick up again. Others, though, beckon me again and I usually pick them up and thoroughly enjoy them.

What about you?

  1. Hi, Melissa! Thank you for visiting my blog! <3

Naw, you're perfectly normal. There are many books that I've read that I didn't find interesting. I won't waste my time on something that doesn't draw my interest. Why would I when I can with something far more interesting? ;)

My daughter started reading Shiver, but didn't like how it used God's name way too often as an expression. She felt so uncomfortable with that, that she put it down.

    Thanks for the post!

  2. Usually if I put a book down, I never go back to it. Lately I haven't found too many engaging books. Whether it's me, busy with other things, or the market, I'm not sure :/

  4. I'm the same way. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up books at the library only to have them languish on my nightstand for weeks. I'll keep renewing them thinking Oh, I'll start on them next. Yeah right. I will also pick up books at home, not be interested, and then pick them up months or years later and they strike a chord.

  5. I've been doing the same thing since I was a kid. I owned Emma for four years before I read it. I started War and Peace six times over about 2 years; the sixth time, I read it straight through and loved it. I have books on my shelves that I've had for years that I haven't read. (Les Miserables, anyone?) The time will be right for each of them...sometime.

Books are like wines, I think; different wines go with different foods, and different books go with different times in our lives.

  6. I have started reading Emma about four times over the course of six years. One day I will get further than the first chapter if only to be able to say I've read all of Austen's books.

I have so little time to read that this is very normal for me. If I'm very lucky on time, and find an extraordinary book that I can't put down, I've been known to stay up all night to finish. But that's rare. Most times even on great books, I have to grab a moment here and there. And those moments may be gapped by weeks or more. And then there are those that I simply cannot get into and probably will stay with the bookmark permanently where I leave it.

  8. I'm the same way. Sometimes it has to do with my mood; other times the distractions in my life. Sometimes I can pick the same book up later and devour it; sometimes I never find it suits me.

Love that header! Have I seen it before? The woman at the typewriter is perfect.
