Here's a Question...

Does 30+ minutes of cleaning house count as exercise?

I almost, almost made my goal of working out three times a week for the entire month of February. Unfortunately, I got hit with a cold on Thursday and had -zero- energy for exercising on Friday, my normal fitness day. I finally felt decent enough to clean house on Sunday, but didn't make it to the gym.

So make me feel better and tell me that I -did- make my monthly goal of exercising three times a week! :-)

  2. Close. Really, close. Don't feel bad though, my husband promptly informed me that chasing behind our three year old was not exercise either.

  3. Many of the online automated slimming applications count housework as exercise. Light exercise. I think scrubbing floors and beating carpets may be what they had in mind, but hey, it's hard work pushing a Hoover around too.

  4. Not my workouts. Although I'd rather workout a million times in a row than clean my house.

  6. Give yourself a break - illness, unexpected events and so on are excused absences, I will write you an offical note so you don't get expelled from the gym. AND you did make up work. A "just curious" question, how many calories did you fry worrying about this? How many calories does extremem stress burn? How many calories do you burn coughing and running a fever with a cold or flu? Inquiring minds want to know??? Is blowing your nose 50 times a day considered exercise?

  7. Were you scrubbing the floors with a toothbrush?

But still, being actually sick is a reason to miss exercise. Last thing you want to do is overwork your body and either get sicker or injure yourself.

You still accomplished an awesome goal. You've gotten the habit of fitting exercise in down, be happy about that!

Oh, I totally think it counts! Especially if you cleaned bathrooms. ;)

  9. Cleaning a house properly isn't easy!! I'm a guy and I feel it's a good workout. Even your wee walks to the pond is exercise, so don't be 'so hard' on yourself sweetie! okay...? :)
And fingers crossed to a speedy recovery.

  10. Yes, it's a workout, and it's good to change it up like that, too. To use your muscles in a different way than your normal workout routine, so there's even that bonus in it for you!

  11. Absolutely! ;)

Hope you're feeling much better, Melissa.

  12. I count runnning up and down the steps of my house as exercise! As many times a day that I do it, surely I get in a 30 minute work out a day! ;-)

  13. I love all the varied responses here! I guess it's just good that I was up and moving and burning SOME calories as opposed to laying around all day. :-)

  14. I remember reading a quote from a personal trainer who said that if people cleaned their own houses more, she'd have fewer clients. Cleaning well is hard work! Not as intense as a gym workout, but it's moving and using your muscles, and that counts.

    Feel better soon!

  15. As I am home sick and can relate, I am going to say...YES! It definitely counts as exercise! Not only counts, but you get double caloric credit and you should reward yourself with either three giant chocolate chip cookies or Baskin Robbins ice cream. If your cold involves a sore throat, I'd go with the ice cream...that counts as therapy, then you can save that credit for cookies later on!

Just popped over to say thanks for visiting my blog and commenting on my Henrietta Lacks post. I find I can totally relate to your time-crunch problems...even in my illness, I am determined to forego sleep and catch up on emails, blog reading, writing, and maybe, just maybe, I'll even get a bit of housework done!

Hope you're feeling better very soon...you've far too much to be laid up long!
