Some Excitement...Finally

Writing has been the proverbial roller coaster lately. Lots of ups and downs, though the last few months have been a LOT of downs.

I knew when I finished writing my fifth novel that it would need major revisions. Little did I know just how major - we're talking ripping out most of the last half of the book. But my brain worked slowly and steadily toward a solution. I took notes, wrote down ideas, and did a lot of thinking.

Last night, all of it finally made sense.

And I'm excited for this novel again.

This is a very, very good thing. I can't wait to dive in and do the work. It's going to be a long haul, but the finished product will be worth it.

What has excited you in your writing world lately?

  1. Congratulations on the pieces all coming together! I'm so excited for you, Melissa! (And that was really cool about the fan letter you got earlier. How neat when contact turns into conversation.)

  2. Yay! To quote a cheesy TV character, "I love it when a plan comes together!"

    1. Ah, Hannibal. He had some pretty good plans (as well as highly unrealistic) come together, didn't he? :)

    1. Thanks so much, JT! Took me awhile to make a header that I liked. I could play around with that stuff all day long!

  4. How exciting! There is nothing like the feeling of knowing what you need to do to get a book where you want it... even if it means gutting portions of it.

    1. Gutting is right - it's going to be a big job. Still, knowing where I'm going makes it a whole lot easier to do. =D

  5. Oh I love it when an ending finally comes together for a book! Truly a wonderful feeling! It always takes me a long time to finally nail it (and sometimes the first time I think I've nailed it actually is a false positive).

    1. I am the same way, Margo! I always think the first time is IT - but then it takes me two or three more tries. Frustrating, but I guess that's how my process works.

  6. Just stopped by to check out your blog. Haven't popped in in a while. Inspiring to hear you found your ending. What has excited me in my writing recently? The feeling that I am coming to the end of the first draft of the autobiography I am ghostwriting/co-writing (My name is going on the cover in the "as told to" mode.) Also, in writing a couple of new sections to insert yesterday, I think I found an ending of sorts. I love how, when you reach a certain point, the writing reveals to you where you are going and how to get there. Take care Melissa.

    1. Hi Jeanne - Congrats on nearly reaching the ending of the autobiography! Always a good feeling to finish something. :) And I agree with you - there is a certain point when everything "clicks" for me in a manuscript, and the excitement is definitely palpable!
