Does Blogging Feel Like a Chore?

I've been blogging for oh, a little over five years now. I love it, yes. But there are days when I really don't have anything to say. Amazing, I know! ;-)

But on those days, I still feel like I owe it to my faithful readers to post something. Usually, it's not a problem to come up with a topic. But lately, my brain has felt empty. And really, does everyone want to read about the nap I took on Saturday afternoon, or the walk down to Walgreens yesterday? I don't think so. *yawn*

On the days when there's nothing to say, blogging feels like a chore. And I don't want it to feel like a chore. I enjoy it too much and I especially enjoy reading other people's blogs to have it wander into the territory of "chore-like." Chores are doing the dishes and folding laundry and vacuuming. *Not* blogging!

So if I don't post every day, you'll know why. I really have nothing profound to impart. I could always post random Daniel Craig pictures, which judging from the last time I did that, no one would really have a problem with. Ha!

Do you ever feel like this?

  1. Keep the pictures coming!! Ha! Ha! Yes, I think we all feel either profoundly intelligent or ho-hum, depending on what day it is. I always enjoy your posts, so you obviously aren't boring!

All I know is, yours is the one blog I read faithfully, and I always enjoy it. So please keep blogging on whatever schedule works for you! :)

  4. I don't think I've yet thought it a chore or inconvenience - I enjoy it much too much! But I have struggled with topics, like you, and I just step back and allow myself some time and patience. My readers tend to understand. :)

  6. Melissa - I do get a bubbling up of need to post something yet I struggle with releasing my voice a lot. So I wouldn't call it a chore for me, more like an agonizing feat (sometimes)! Yet when I get it together, it feels so good. I started blogging to help release my voice more. I think there's been progress, albeit slow but that's my style!

  7. I second Janna's kudos - Congrats on 5 years, that's quite a commitment! I post every couple of days, which I think helps with the ideas and material for me, a little time between posts. I think whatever works for you, your readers will appreciate and understand.

  8. Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I really hate when I go back and look at my earlier posts and see how good some of them were. Sigh...

  9. sorry, hit the button before I finished.

It does seem harder and harder to come up with stuff people want to read. And just when I feel like I should quit, I get a new lease on blogging life or I get a surge in traffic.

  10. That's okay, it happens to the best of us. I never post as often as you do. I've decided that is okay ;)

  11. I think we all need to do what works best for us with the blogging! And five years is a long time! I honestly don't know what I'll have to blog about in five months!!

  12. Yes, it's tough for me. That's why I only post three times a week. Five years, good for you. :)

  13. there are been blogs for 5 years-amazing. I just started a little over a year ago and love it. There is a sense of community and communication that we all seem to be reaching out for...

  14. Clearly there are days I just don't blog, too! If I don't have something good to say, I don't blog, and if I have something to say but can't form a coherant thought, I don't blog. That said, I try not to go more than a week and only rarely so people don't think I've given it up. It's a balancing act to be sure.

I just figure it's obvious if a post is forced.

I think it's just fine to take days off - you can also post links and things like that on those days, that helps me - or a funny picture!

  15. My rule has only been... only blog when I want to. So know worries, I never expect anything else from anyone else. It's just nice to get to read about you when you want to share. Or if you do have pictures.. I'm very visual LOVE pictures! LOL! Jenni

  16. Yeah, when I'm busy it does, which is why I only post now when I have the time to post something interesting (well, hopefully it's interesting *g*).

Your posts are always great :) And I'd never know any of them feel like a chore.

  17. If I don't feel like blogging or have absolutely nothing to say, I don't. I also don't if I don't get time to log on. To be honest, I've seen blogs where folk have posted rubbish on days when they can't think of anything, and I'd rather see nothing than rubbish. (I'm talking really bad jokes or spam, not eye candy pics. :o) ) When someone started to do that regularly, I just deleted them from my blog roll.

The blog roll is a real help when folk don't blog every day. Even though it does sometimes take around 45 minutes to update on occasions, it still saves you clicking on over to find that nothing new has been posted.

If you blog when it feels like a chore, it soon will stop feeling like fun, it will feel like work, and you'll get fed up and do something else. So I don't think there's a problem - so long as it's only a day or so ... :oD

  18. I don't blog if I don't have time or if--as you so aptly put it--my brain feels empty (usually because I'm working on the book, and I feel like I don't have any words left over!) Long ago I decided on quality over quantity. Everyone picks the schedule best for her--do what's right for you, and we'll continue to flock here to read it!

Oh, and I second (or third) the idea of Daniel Craig pics. Mmmm.

  19. I'm so glad you brought this up! And I loved reading that everyone of us feels the same way. We all get to feeling boring and don't want to post a boring post--but then again--it's our blog to do as we please. I always enjoy everything you write. I feel I get to know you better and not just as a writer.
Thank you too for prayer for us. IT meant so much to me to see all the prayers go out!

  20. Sometimes it does feel like a chore. On the other hand, there are days when I use it to have a good rant. I do like to sound off into the ether now and again. :o)

  21. M, I'm so behind on reading. argh! But on the days when nothing comes to mind, maybe you could do a re-run of a good post for newer readers. :)
