What Are You Reading? Sizzling Summer Edition

Tomorrow is the first day of summer. (It's also my dad's birthday and I forgot to mail his card. Gah!)

Anyway.

Since I'm not a summer person and heat agrees with me just about as much as poison ivy, I love to spend my days curled up inside my house reading or writing.

I've found that I've succumbed to the frightful habit of reading more than one book at a time. So my reading list right now is composed of these gems:

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys - I normally don't read young adult novels, but this one is set in Lithuania and Siberia during World War II. I was hooked from the first page and had to stop myself from reading the entire thing last night so I could get some other things done.

The Sound of Paper by Julia Cameron - Sometimes, I need an artistic and creative boost. Julia Cameron unfailingly delivers it with her beautiful essays on writing and the creative life.

The Second World War by Antony Beevor - This is a brand new book and it's a mammoth one at 880 pages. It may take me awhile to get through, but I'm looking forward to it.

What are you reading?

  1. Hey, Melissa! I just found your blog from visiting the Fedora Lounge. You sent me a message long ago and I never saw it in my inbox. So so sorry. I'm a writer, too. I write Christian romance. My debut novel Garters For Lace is set in 1870 in Kansas. Feel free to visit my blog at http://brandiboddie.blogspot.com. Chat with you later!

    1. I don't think I've ever read a Stephen King book, except for his "On Writing" which I really enjoyed.

  3. Since I bought an ereader I am constantly reading 2 books at a time - 1 on the reader the other a 'real' book!
I'm a bit like you with the heat, so I'm enjoying our winter down here. It's been very cold the last couple of weeks with heavy frosts and snow on the hills. Nothing better than curling up with a good book in front of the fire :)

    1. It's so strange to think that while I'm sweating here in the heat (summer just started today), you're piling on the blankets for winter! :-)

  4. Just finished Graceling and will be starting Fire tomorrow I think. Pretty good. Keeps me going on the elliptical so that's always a good sign :)

    1. I tried to read once while I was on the treadmill and I got dizzy and almost fell off. LOL

  5. I'm like you can't read one book at a time(having a bookshop does not help the book addition). I have such a huge pile of books next to my bed that if they fell on me I don't think I would survive. I'm reading a Paulo Coelho book of short reflections (can never remember the names of books), a book by Jon Kabbat-Zinn - on mindfulness, some art books, a metaphysical book by Caroline Meyers and few recipe books, some books on drawing and a few magazines. Oh yes and some journals by Thomas Merton. I need to give up work and remain in bed for the rest of my life to get through them all!!! Enjoy your summer and your books xox.

    1. I tend to accumulate tons of books on my nightstand, too! I have to weed through them every couple of weeks!

  6. I've heard good things about Between shades of grey. I don't have a list this summer. I'm afraid that I'm not super excited about anything.

    1. I get that way sometimes, too, Patti, where I can't find a book to get excited about.

  7. I often have a few books going at a time, but they have to be very different or I mix them up. Since we are leaving on a long trip, I've been downloading an eclectic mix of books to my iPad, including: Michael Hyatt's "Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, Marcus Luttrell's "Service: A Navy Seal at War, Thomas Sowell's "Intellectuals and Society", and Allen Furst's "Mission to Paris."

    1. Those all sound really good, Jasmina. I've tried to read Allen Furst before but can't seem to get into his books. Maybe I'll get it another go.

  8. This is the second time today I've heard someone mention Between Shades of Grey. The Sound of Paper also sounds wonderful. Now the third one - over 800 pages sounds really intimidating! But I devoured Winds of War and its sequel, and several other WWII-related books.... btw, have you read the Greatest Generation and if so, is it a good one to read?
