Heat Wave

Wow. We have had temperatures in the 100's for several days now, with not a drop of rain to cool us off. Those who have given up on watering the lawn (and because of the city's "recommendation" not to water every day) have brown, ugly grass. My evergreen bushes in my front yard are even turning brown. I have never seen that before.

Yeah, it's hot.

And I'm not happy about it.

Luckily, relief is in sight. We have a chance of rain tomorrow and the temperatures are supposed to drop back into the 90s. That's a heck of a lot better than the 100's!

I've been writing, albeit slowly. I've also been reading a fantastic novel - I love it when I read a book that I don't want to put down.

What have you been up to?

  1. We've had similar conditions here too—everyone's lawns are brown as can be, with only a few patches of green in places that are shady all day. I've seen quite a few evergreens turning brown (and even losing their needles) too! There's been very little rain, though we're finally beginning to get some now.

    1. I think we're in the worst drought in 50 years. Horrible. I'm glad you're getting some rain - I'm praying the forecast for our rain comes true!

  2. My parents have told me about this; it sounds really awful! In contrast, we have had some of the rainiest few months ever! It seems really unfair. We are now enjoying some warmer weather and sunshine, so praying that your relief comes quickly, too. :)

    1. Isn't it strange how weather works? I would rather take rainy days than all this heat! But I'm glad you're getting some warmer weather now. :)

  3. We're getting a reprieve from our heat wave, it's rainy and cloudy today. Hopefully you get yours soon.

  4. Here in Minnesota we had a small break from the heat in the early morning hours. It rained (more like stormed) for a few hours this morning. Because of that the day started off cooler but it didn't last long. This afternoon is just as hot and humid as every other day in July! We are lucky though that the crops are still doing decent. Other places in the Midwest are not as lucky. Fall and cooler weather just can't seem to come quick enough!

Through the grapevine I heard that the third season of Downton Abbey will begin in January on PBS. However, we still have to get through this summer...

    1. Yes - not until January! I am seriously considering moving to England for a few months since it starts there in September!

  5. I'm writing, and preparing to give a lecture at a local writers conference in August, but mostly I'm waiting to hear from my agent and thereby going slowly insane...

We're getting days of summer alternating with cloudy & cool. No rain this week though, yay! (We have the opposite problem of the rest of the country.) This morning I had to turn off the heat...I don't care how cold it gets in the house, I refuse on principle to pay for heat in late July. :-)

I hope your heat wave breaks and you get some cooler weather! I remember the bad drought in California, the year I lived in the Sierra Nevadas; people's wells failed, and you could see the dead pines on the mountainsides. That was the year Yosemite burned. Dreadful.

    1. I think I need to move to your neck of the woods, Christine. Having to wear a sweater in July sounds pretty darn nice to me!

Hope you heart from your agent soon - waiting is the hardest part of this writing business.

  6. I hope the heat breaks soon and you get some rain.
Down here our bitterly cold winter has turned mild, but I'm sure it's not over yet!

  7. We've had an incredibly hot and dry summer too, the hay for our horses is going to cost a fortune! Fortunately we've had some rain this week, so wonderful to listen to it and smell it - I've missed it so much! So what's that great book you're reading?

    1. I, too, am looking forward to that wonderful smell of rain! And the book I'm reading is a WW2 thriller that just came out - Flight from Berlin by David John. Excellent!

  8. Very hot here in Cornwall too for the first time this year so we are lapping it up. Had troubles with my van unfortunately so trying to sort that out..... and getting as much sun as possible!

    1. I really need to visit Cornwall some day, FP. And I could deal with a little heat if it only came in July and then disappeared. :-)

  9. Hot here too, and no A/C, but luckily our house stays really cool inside on the first floor. Upstairs is like an oven though, and our bedrooms are upstairs. We've been camping out downstairs-kind of fun, but it confuses the dogs!

    What novel are you reading?

    1. No a/c? Ack! Around here, it's pretty much a requirement. You can get away with it in western Nebraska, where I'm from, because it cools off at night. But we have this awful humidity and it just makes everything worse.

I think you would like the book - it's a new WW2 thriller: Flight from Berlin by David John.

  10. Enjoyed a short getaway, even with a knee injury in the mix. Humboldt County was cool and cloudy, a welcome break! The Redwoods really are magnificent, took away my breath. Now, back to revising! Stay cool; that's some HOT weather you've got.

    1. I think I need a short getaway, too, so I may have to make sure and do that very soon. But while it's this hot...ugh. I barely want to leave the house!

  11. I'd love to curl up in a chair and read a book right now. I've been busy preparing for the olympics... well not to compete but things are hectic in le day job. Hope you are well! And thank you for the fabulous comment on my blog yesterday! xo
